This book follows the story of New Orleans from its foundation as a French colony in the 17th century, through its meteoric rise as a centre for the cotton trade (and the slave trade) through the traumas of the Civil War and the rise of segregationalism, to its present day eminence. It charts the origin and development of jazz, the music most closely associated with the city. It then deals in some detail with the events of Hurricane Katrina, which struck the city in 2005, and the consequences of which continue to threaten the city's very existence. After charting the attempts at rebuilding the community of New Orleans, it attempts to look into the crystal ball and glimpse what the future holds for the Crescent City.
