This book seeks to analyse the relationship existing between two different classes with antagonistic interests. Both of the classes were condemned to live side by side in the same geographical area because each class was dependent on the other one in order to exist and survive. Africa and America in the 21st century were characterized by exploitation which led to social confrontation. the upper-class wanted to preserve their domination upon the lower-class workers which wanted to turn the situation upside down. Being conscious of the owners'intentions, the apple-pickers in In Dubious Battle and the low-class workers in Devil on the Cross gathered their efforts to put a curb to exploitation. That helped thus to favour the emergence of a new leadership.
