There are a number of factors that affect negatively the quality of education children receive. These are related to four players: the teachers, the pupils, the communities from where the children come and the Government. Some of the factors are beyond the control of teachers – e.g. home factors, Government factors that hinge on policy. However, there are some factors for which the teachers have control and where they can do something – administration, teacher and pupils factors as well as classroom factors. Classroom interaction between the teachers and the pupils has the biggest influence on the performance of the pupils. Some of the hindrances to good pupil performance include lack of pupil requisites like learning and teaching materials, desks, difficulties in applying appropriately the teaching methods in, corporal and other forms of punishment, teachers’ lack of motivation due to poor working conditions, absenteeism of both teachers and pupils.
