During recent years boron deficiency is causing concern due to the increased number of cases reported in several Indian soils, which were previously not reported to be deficient in boron. Boron is significant for yield and reproduction in crop plants due to its involvement in translocation of sugars from the source leaves to growing meristems and reproductive parts as metabolic sinks. The problem of B deficiency has been overlooked for many years during the Green Revolution, when greater emphasis was given to increase productivity by the use of high yielding varieties of crop plants, high analysis fertilizers, intensive cropping pattern etc. These have been the major causes behind the depletion of soil B reserve and yield limitation in areas marginal in available B content. The book focuses on the problems related with the deficiency of boron in soils as well as in plants and will help the students in understanding the role of boron in plant growth and metabolism.
