High wear rate of tillage tools and the increasing difficulty of importing replacements have constituted major constraints to tillage practices on Nigerian soils. Also, farmers and equipment operators constantly complain about the high wear rate of ground tools especially in dry land agricultural areas. To this end,most existing cultivators are underused or totally abandoned in some cases because of these identified problems. Furthermore, information on a scientific approach to the refurbishment and/or replacement of worn tillage tools using locally available materials is lacking.
