Slave raiding in the region increased significantly after the collapse of the Mali Empire (c. 1600 AD) and slavery was a main part of the economy in many Tuareg, Mande, and Fula communities. The French took control over the area in the 1890s and abolished slavery in 1905. Although some slaves left their positions of servitude following this declaration, many remained and the relationships of servitude persisted for decades in much of the country. With the political opening of the creation of the French Fourth Republic in 1946, large number of slaves left their positions of servitude and the slavery issue became a key political issue of the Sudanese Union – African Democratic Rally (US-RDA).
