Witches' Sabbath or The Great He-Goat (Spanish: Aquelarre or El gran cabron) are names given to a mural probably completed between 1820 and 1823 by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya. The work is now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid and shows Satan in the form of a silhouetted goat presiding in moonlight over a coven of disfigured, ugly and terrified witches. It is generally assumed to be a satire on the credulity of the age and a mocking condemnation of both popular superstition and the witch trials of the Spanish Inquisition. The painting is one of the 14 so-called Black Paintings executed in oil directly onto the plaster walls of his house, Quinta del Sordo, during 1820-823. The painting was completed while the artist was living alone in mental and physical distress, around the age of 75, and seems to explore themes of violence, intimidation, ageing and death. Its two principal characters are the inhuman devil and the withdrawn young girl...
