Ireland’s native population of flora and fauna inhabited the island via the land bridge that connected it to Britain until rising sea levels broke the link around 10,000 BC. When the very first hunter-gatherers arrived, by boat, some 2,000 years after this, they encountered an island shaped by retreating glaciers and a process of forestation of pine, hazel, elm, birch and oak woodlands, which would largely define the appearance of large parts of the country until the 16th century. Among the animals they encountered are some that are still part of the Irish countryside today: red deer, foxes, badgers, stoats and otters. A number of larger mammals, also commonplace at the time, have since become extinct: the great Irish elk, bears and wolves (the last of which was hunted down in 1786) ..
