A diplomatic dispute over the use of the name Macedonia has been an ongoing issue in the bilateral relations between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia since the latter became independent from former Yugoslavia in 1991. Greece opposes the use of the name without any qualification such as 'northern' of the post-1991 constitutional name of its northern neighbour, citing historical and territorial concerns resulting from the ambiguity between it and the adjacent Greek region of Macedonia. Greece also objects to the publication of maps showing an 'undivided' Macedonia which shows both countries as a single one, interpreting this as an attempt to claim some of their territory. Greece also objects to the ambiguous use of the term Macedonian for the neighbouring country's main ethnic group and language.
